In line with the stage 3 restrictions announcement by the Victorian State Government on 07 July, The Old Melbourne Gaol will close to the public from Thursday 09 July.
This temporary closure will continue until stage 3 restrictions are lifted.
For ticketholders for Gaol admission and the Cluedo Experience from July 9 onward, we will hold your tickets over to be transferred to a new date of your choice once restrictions have lifted. Ticketholders will receive a notification shortly with further instructions.
If you have purchased a ticket and wish to receive a refund (including fees) directly to your account instead please email your request with your ticket number to firstname.lastname@example.org.
When the Old Melbourne Gaol was built in the mid-1800s, it dominated the Melbourne skyline as a symbol of authority. Inside the Gaol, dangerous criminals were held alongside petty offenders, the homeless and the mentally ill.
Between 1842 and its closure in 1929 the gaol was the scene of 133 hangings including Australia’s most infamous citizen, the bushranger Ned Kelly.
Your ticket include self-guided entry into the Old Melbourne Gaol and Watch House, as well as access to download the audio guide app.

Timed and limited capacity for each session
For entry from 27 June- 31 August
As capacity restrictions apply, we have timed session admission with a maximum of 20 people at each time.
10 am Admission Entry with a 11:30am Watch House Experience
11:30am Admission Entry with a 1pm Watch House Experience
1pm Admission Entry with a 2:30pm Watch House Experience
2:30 pm Admission Entry with a 3:30pm Watch House Experience
3:30 pm Admission Entry with a 4:30pm Watch House Experience
Note: The 2:30pm and 3:30pm sessions are 90 minute experiences. If you are a first time visitor, a family or playing Cluedo you may want to consider booking into the earlier sessions (120 mins).
For entry from 1 September
Entry will be on a daily basis with no timed ticketing

As capacity restrictions will apply, we suggest pre-purchasing your tickets online. Please note you can purchase tickets upon arrival, however, there may be a wait due to capacity guidelines.

New conditions of entry
In response to COVID-19, the National Trust have introduced the following protocols to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of visitors, staff and volunteers to the Old Melbourne Gaol.
- We ask you stay at home if you are experiencing any cold or flu-like symptoms
- Must register your first name and phone number upon entry
- Please use cards for a contactless transaction
- Must maintain a distance of 1.5m from others and follow directional signage
- Please use sanitiser and handwashing facilities
- Be aware that capacity restrictions apply and we recommend pre-purchasing your tickets in advance
- Download the COVIDSafe App if able to do so
Facilities will also be closely maintained and monitored, including the ongoing revision of hygiene protocols and the increased cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces.
